Quick Gestures.
Soli technology inNest Hub.
Meet the second-gen Nest Hub from Google,4 featuring Quick Gestures enabled by Soli technology. Quick Gestures help you quickly take action and focus on what matters. Play or pause a song or video, snooze an alarm, or even stop a timer with a wave of your hand. In the kitchen or on your bedside table, Nest Hub is the center of your helpful home.
4Google Nest Hub requires a Wi-Fi network, a nearby electrical outlet, and a compatible (Android, iOS) mobile device. Minimum OS requirements are available at g.co/home/req. iOS is a trademark of Cisco and is used under license.
Just wave your hand.
Quick Gestures use Soli technology to detect when your hand moves – without a camera. You can use Quick Gestures to control many Nest Hub features. Play or pause a song or video, snooze an alarm, and stop a timer.
Long range gestures.
For the Nest Hub, our team tuned Soli’s radar settings for an expanded gesture sensing range of 3m. This allows for natural interactions in a larger area of the home. In order to deliver this, we collected a new dataset of gesture samples and updated our model architecture to improve performance.

Motion Sense with Soli.
Soli technology in Pixel 4.
Our team has introduced the Soli chip, platform, and interaction model to the Pixel 4 phone. The Soli sensor is located at the top of the phone, creating an interactive hemisphere that can sense and understand movements around the phone¹.
Pixel 4 was the first device with Soli, powering Motion Sense which allows you to skip songs, snooze alarms, and silence phone calls without touching your phone. Motion Sense is available in select countries².
Use of technology.
Soli employs a fundamentally different sensing paradigm based on motion. We were able to fit Soli’s entire antenna array for Pixel 4 on a 5 mm x 6.5 mm x 0.873 mm chip package, allowing the radar to be integrated in the top of the phone.
Use of interactions.
The Pixel 4 supports swipes, taps, reach, and presence. Swipe is often used to navigate media, such as switching songs. Tap pauses or plays media. Reach turns on the face authentication, and presence turns off the display when you walk away. These features combine to make the Pixel 4 a polite device which accepts the right interaction for the situation at hand.

A New Interaction Language
Five years of research went into developing Soli, a miniature radar chip that detects motion and understands nonverbal cues. The team behind the project details what it took to design a truly intuitive interface, and why this is only the beginning.

Soli technology in the Nest Thermostat.
Meet the Nest Thermostat which uses Soli technology to help create a borderless, mirrored display and sense motion.
Seamless integration.
The Soli sensor is integrated into the mirror display. Since the radar signal penetrates through the plastic and glass, the enclosure is seamless without the need for an aperture.
Help saving energy.
Nest thermostats are designed to help people save energy. One way they do this is by limiting energy that’s wasted on heating or cooling a home when nobody’s there. If you turn on this setting, the thermostats will use motion sensing to detect if you’ve stepped out and can automatically turn down to your preferred Eco temperature.

Soli technology inthe Nest Hub.
Sleep Sensing5 uses motion and sound to monitor your sleep – no need to wear or charge extra devices. It tracks when you go to bed, when you wake up, and how long you’ve slept.6 and 7
Every morning, you can see your sleep summary on Nest Hub. Or just ask, “Hey Google, how did I sleep last night?”
5Sleep Sensing requires a subscription service. Learn more at g.co/sleepsensing/preview. Sleep Sensing features are subject to your permissions and settings. They use motion, sound, and other device and sensor data to work and require placing the device close to the bed and calibrating the device for your sleeping position. Google Assistant, Google Fit app and other Google apps may be required for full functionality. Google Assistant requires a Google Account.
6Device placement and nearby people, pets, or noises can cause inaccurate readings.
7Sleep Sensing feature is not intended to diagnose, cure, mitigate, prevent or treat any disease or condition. Consult your healthcare professional for questions about your health.
Use of Technology.
Sleep Sensing in second-gen Nest Hub demonstrates the first wellness application of Soli. Soli’s ability to sense implicit movement from a distance is well suited for sleep tracking because you don’t need to wear a device (and remember to charge it) for it to work. Furthermore, radar is a much more private sensor than a camera, which is fitting for something that you invite into a private space like a bedroom.
Sleep Quality.
The Soli-based sleep tracking algorithm gives you a convenient and reliable way to see how much sleep you are getting and when sleep disruptions occur from things like coughing or snoring. Nest Hub also uses its array of sensors to track common sleep disturbances, such as light level changes, and temperature.
